Hey VW peeps. I'm doing repairs and maintenance on my 03 1.8t AWP Jetta to get it ready drive. It has been sitting for almost a year so I expected their to be a few things needing to be done. Anyways I believe that the head gasket could be blown because of multiple signs and I'm hoping I could get a second opinion before tearing the engine apart.
Here are the symptoms
Dirty coolant in reservoir. I remember in the past every time I would change the antifreeze it wouldn't keep its color very long and would turn dark brown. Also a small amount of smoke continuously comes out of the coolant reservoir. I don't see air bubbles in the reservoir but the coolant has alot of movement too, which I though was normal.
Large amount of water comes out of the exhaust pipe, even when the engine is warm.
I believe this is an exhaust leak but smoke comes out from where the exhaust manifold and turbo bolt together. I wasn't able to get the best view because of the tight fit where the turbo is.
Would it be possible if the head gasket is blown and is leaking in that area?? That seems like it would be a large leak.
The turbo was replaced a couple years ago. I should of done it myself but did not have the time. Is an exhaust leak common where the turbo bolts up?? I know their are metal gaskets.
Well here are my compression test results. I did a test almost 2-3 years ago and the results were pretty much the same. Can't remember if Cyl 3 had the drop in pressure compared to the other cylinders. Would this indicate a blown gasket in area of cyl 3 or maybe the valves are worn?
Cylinder 1: 130 PSI After oil added 140PSI
Cylinder 2: 125 PSI After oil added 155PSI
Cylinder 3: 105 PSI After oil added 130PSI
Cylinder 4: 125 PSI After oil added 165PSI
My book says minimum pressure is 110PSI
I'm afraid Ive caused damage to the head because I've never ran G12. At one point I used Dex-Cool. It gummed up alot. I've had this car for a long time
Anyways if theirs any other information I could supply to help make the decision on the head gasket feel free to let me know.
Any help is greatly appreciated. :smile2:
