Depending on where you live and drive I recommend that you use either ELF 5-55 full synthetic or Mobil 1 5-30 full synthetic oil. ELF is more expensive but in my opinion provides superior protection in hot climates.

I also recommend that you use only an OEM Mann oil filter.

As to how to physically change the oil and filter... I am reluctant to provide because it sounds like you have never done an oil change before. Unless you have the proper equipment, floor jack and jack stands and know how to safely use them you could serious hurt or even kill yourself.

A full service oil change using Mobil 1 (which is what I use in my Jetta) and Mann oil filter at my dealership only costs $60. Your dealership may very well charge much less.

I used to change my oil and filter at the lesser of four months or 4K miles myself; but now I let the dealership to it. I have gotten a little too old to crawl around underneath Miss Jetta even on a creeper.

well i guess thats that then. ill go and make an appointment... what do you mean by OEM Mann filter though?

Also, the previous owner used penzoil platinum full synthetic 5w-30. I live in canada so the weather can be pretty volatile going from -20 to 30 celcius.

I think you have made a wise choice.

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer [specification]. "Mann" is the brand name of the filter that comes standard from the factory on all Jettas.

In my opinion 5-30 full synthetic should serve you well in your climate; unless your winter temps seriously go below zero (F); then you might consider 5-20 full synthetic for the season. Oil brands are a very personal individual choice. While I swear by ELF and Mobil 1 others will swear by Quaker State, Penzoil etc.

Again, in my opinion, as long as you use a "major" brand of oil rated 5-30 (5-20) synthetic and a "full size" major brand oil filter and you change your oil and filter at reasonable intervals your Jetta will perform for you.

Good luck and good driving.
