Question Interior lights not coming on with driver door open

I recently bought an 02 Jetta GLS and when i open the driver door, the interior lights do not come on. When I open the passenger door, they work fine as they should. Is there a sensor or something to check for the driver door?

i must be clueless because i cant find the sensor. the Door Open indicator lamp in the instrument cluster also does not light up with the drivers door open.

If you know where the door open sensor is, let me know. Could it be a relay issue?

thanks.

The driver's door on my 2001 Jetta does pretty much the same thing. I can make the lights come on when I pull the door handle (inside or outside) slowly. I think it's the microswitch #4 that they talk about in the Vortex writeup.

i should have listened, in that thread it said this didnt affect the 2002's. I figured it was the same problem so i dug the whole way down to those pins just to see mine were fine.

must be a different issue on mine. or the module is just bad.

i tried to figure out what fuse it may be but couldnt understand the fuse card. Ill have to look more into it and update if i find anything.

just to recap:
when i open the drivers door:
the interior lights do not come on
the door open indicator on the instrument cluster does not light up
the small red light on the door itself does not light or receive power

the black sensor in the door jam column (it looks like a rubber grommet) is likely broken in the open position which is common. since the circuit is open the car assumes the door is closed.

this is easy to test and cheap to fix.

thanks for your response to my door open situation. can you give me some more info on the door sensor that may be stuck? is it on the door, or on the frame of the car? are you referring to this switch?

1993-1999 Volkswagen Jetta Door Jamb Switch - JLB

that lists up to 1999, but mine is a 2002. i really cant seem to locate a push button type switch on the door or jamb.

Yeah, that is the correct switch for an MK3 but as you have said i don't see it listed for an MK4. I sold my mk4 so I don't know for sure.

Let's see if an Mk4 gut can chime in.

There has to be a contact somewhere in the jamb. right?

also, the Door chime doesnt work and when I drive, the door doesnt lock. All of the other doors lock.

However, today, for 1 second something was different. I drove and heard the driver door lock on its own. I opened the door, saw the light on the instrument cluster come on and heard the door open chime. It only lasted 1 second, and I couldnt get it to happen again, but maybe this is helpful to diagnose the problem.

Default 2002 vw golf interior lights do not come on the when driver door is opened

I have been having a problem with my interiors light and the door indicator light on the dash when the driver door is open. The red side light on the door also does not light when the door is open. The passenger lights work when the door is open though, so I see that it has to do with the driver door some how but I don't see any answers to this problem for a 2002 golf.
Can anyone help me?
