Default Looking for info on a Turbo Diesel.

I tried to use the search function, but it does not like TDi.

Do any of you know what to look for (problem areas) when buying a TDi VW? Are all the Golf, Jetta, and Bugs 1.9s the same, I am guessing that would be a yes.

Has anyone here done a timing belt on one of these? I have seen posts about gettting a pro to do it, but I always do my own. I have worked on a few Diesel Landrovers, and done complete engine rebuilds on Skyline GTRs, so I know my way around the garage. I have tools out the you know what. Speaking of tools, what special tool will I need for one of these cars?

When I was in England, I got to drive an 04 Golf TDi, and was very surprised at the peep the engine had, I knew it was going to handle well, but the engine did surprise me. Much better power band than my Landrover TDi but to be expected.

This will be my first German car, so I was looking for input from guys in the know. Any advantages from any of the VWs on the market that are not obvious?

I love cars, so I am looking forward to finally owning a VW in the near future.

More that I like.

The first pic is a GTR front strengthening bar that I was working on, so nevermind that pic. My bad.

Spent the last 7 years in Europe, hence all the pics from that side of the pond, and me wanting a diesel.
