Default Mk4 Golf Starting Problems

Hello
I apologise in advance but this will be a bit long.

We have a 1999 1.4S 3 door mk4 golf with key turn entry and no remote blipper system.
Recently it has begun to play up intermittently.

Problem 1
When locking the car you sometimes need to hold the key to the left or turn it a second time to the left to get the red flashing led to flash.

Problem 2
Worse still and apparently unconnected to the above sometimes the car wonít start.
We unlock the car turn the ignition key and the warning lights come on as usual then continue turning the key to the start stage and the car does nothing. The usual warning lights stay on but thereís no starter motor whirr nor any clicking just quiet.
Sometimes it fixes itself after a few minutes or by illogical things like locking and unlocking the car, opening the windows, swearing a lot etc.

We have done a fair bit of searching on the web and found people with starting problems but they seem different. Some state that the starter spins but the car doesnít fire up. Itís suggested that itís the immobiliser but others say that the immobiliser doesnít stop the starter motor spinning.
One forum said it was that the ignition switch was faulty but theyíd had problems with the switch in the past and we havenít. Some said itís the immobiliser coil on the ignition switch thatís collapsing and others that the wiring might be breaking down.

Does anyone have experience of this particular fault?
Does the immobiliser still allow the starter to spin or is it likely to be the ignition switch and immobiliser sensor?

Weíve tried the other key to no avail.

Patience wearing thin PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks in anticipation

I wonder if you have problems with your door lock modules as far as the door stuff. I've seen posts on some forums particularly concerning the '99 model year that there were soldering problems on the door lock module. The terminals just needed resoldering as there were cracks or missing solder around the joints. The door lock module apparently also has three or four microswitches which can also be intermittently bad. When you have the problem and you open and close the door a few times there might be enough vibration to make the connection work again for a while. Sorry I can't be of more help than that.
