Wink More Advice Please ...

Yep, it's the two chicks again. One other thing...

We just replaced the rear shocks in our '01 Jetta 1.8T, because - well - they obviously needed it. Part of the reason we changed them was an atrocious knocking noise that comes from the driver's side rear of the car when going over good size bumps, and to a slightly lesser degree, when going around a rightward bend in the road at a good speed.

The shock replacement did not fix this problem. What else could be causing the knocking noise? How do we determine which of the other possible causes is actually the culprit?

Thanks, VW mens.

Could be the fronts or your bump stops could be shot as well...rear control arms possibly...only way to find out is to have someone jack the car up and look at it. Is the noise exclusive to the rear of the car?

The noise IS exclusive to the rear of the car, and to the driver's side only. I will double check the bolts in the shock mounts and the lower blot/nut strut combo. However, I am quite sure they are tight, because I used my bro's air tools to do the job. Also, we replaced the shock mounts when we replaced the shocks, so they're good.

Cody, how can I tell if bump stop or control arm is shot?

The bump stops you'll have to remove the shock and check to see it should be a long yellow piece that looks like a dog toy...if it's cracked or torn then it could be causing your shocks to bottom out but that's just a guess on my part. The rear control arms will make a squeaking noise if you rock the car back and forth if they're on their way out..jack the car up and look at the bushings and see if they're shot or if the control arm itself is bent or anything. I'm just speculating at this point but that's kind of what happened to my friends BMW but RWD is a whole different beast altogether as far as suspension goes.

Are you running lowering springs or aftermarket shocks of any sort?

not saying the mount is not tight to the car, i am saying it is not tight to the strut.

If you used airtools, as i did, you could have just spun the shaft in circles, as i did, and when you started driving you heard the mount banging around. Take the strut off and hold the shaft of the strut in place (i used a padded Vice grip) and try to tighten the top mount nut. this should fix the problem IMO.

Cody is right, CA bushings will squeak when pushed laterally.
