P1296 Code issue

Ok I need some advice on this one. I have a 01' Golf with a VR6 and the CEL keeps coming on. I get a code of P1296. The code reads Manufacturer Controlled fuel and air metering but I keep reading that it is a Coolant Temperature Sensor. So I changed out the Coolant Temperature Sensor with a new green top sensor and the light came back on. Any Ideas???

That code is a malfunction in cooling system. Either your thermostat is getting lazy or your water pump isnt pumping efficently enough.

Of the three things mentioned, that's probably the least likely to fail. How many miles and what year is the car?

It is a 2001 with about 109K on it. The water pump isn't making any funky noises but who knows. So how much trouble is it to change out the thermostat?

Doesn't mean the impellers aren't broken. It's almost time to do your timing chain anyway, might be a good idea for you to do your timing chain and do all the above suggestions at the same time since the labor is all pretty much the same.
