tape error

So I just bought a cassette player connector to my ipod so that I could listen to my ipod through my stereo in my '00 jetta. Everything was fine, until randomly it will stop playing the music, switch between side A and B twice, and then spit my cassette out saying "tape error". What exactly does this mean, is it the tape player or the tape itself.. I literally bought it today. And if it is the tape player, where do I go from here?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

do the wheels in the tape spin freely?

personally I'd say swap it out for an aftermarket deck that is iPod ready or has an Aux input since the OEM decks are junk. But don't know if you have that type of cash.

There are no real wheels on a tape adapter -just a -10 dbv signal on a wire attached to the metal playback head.

I never gave a damn about the meterman,...

-til I was the one who had to read the meter....

....man.

yes but the tape player doesn't know that. if the wheels don't spin freely the deck will think it's at the end of the tape. if they don't spin freely in either direction the deck will just keep thinking that each side is at the end.

Only reason I bring that issue up is way back in the day I had a tape adapter do the same thing and that was the issue.

I see your point. That actually makes alot of sense.

My tape adapter in my wife's honda doesn't have any wheels and does not interact with the motor gears. If i remember correctly on the ones Ive had in the past they are just usually little geared rings that spin on an adapter. I guess you could even lubricate them.

the thing is, it works for about 15 minutes, and then it flips to side B by itself, then back to A, then it spits it out. how would it work for 15 min, and then just randomly stop?
