I'm a very unimaginative person at the best of times, and i want to make my '00 golf worth having, what can i do its engine/looks to make it better, as many suggestions as possible, whether its sound, performance, lights etc, open to suggestion guys.!!
Oh wow, I could go on for hours. First let's talk budget. How much are you willing to spend, and over what period of time (do you have a lot now, or is this going to be a progressive thing?). What engine do you have, 2 doors or 4...
What ^^^^ asked... Once you give us a foundation to work with you will get a ton of answers... but each of us has our own style, you will have to create one of your own...
Take a look around, there is so much information here...and as mentioned, you need to stay true to your own tastes, not everyone elses.
Your TDI engine has great tuning capabilities for a diesel...just do it right or they become very tempermental.

Its a '00 dark blue golf tdi, 90bhp 5-speed manual. Cheapest way to make it faster? willing to spend up to £700, but as cheap as possible, i'm a student. Looks wise, how do u go about painting a car? is it worth buying any body, if so, where is cheap, how do i find the right colour to paint it?
Kerma 520 or Bosch 0.205mm injectors (aprox. $155), mapped Upsolute or Rocketchip software (aprox. $340, the Oldman intake to replace the usless CAI (aprox. $120), and a custom straight pipe removing everything after the mid-pipe ($50 at local muffler shop) will yeild you around 130 WHP and 280 ft-lbs of torque to the wheels.
Oldman intake retains the stock airbox, allowing you to upgrade to a better drop-in (K&N, ITG, Pipercross, etc...)
With these mods come a necessary need to change out the clutch, which will run you between $500-530 (depending on flywheel option) to give your car the ability to handle 300 ft-lbs.
This is the exact treatment my wifes TDI will be receiving by Summer if all goes well.
If you want to get even more crazy Upsolute has stage II kits which include a frount mount intercooler, and an upcoming stage III kit with a larger turbo (TBD) with hopes of producing 200 WHP. Added to the above list, larger race injectors from Kerma, the Dieselgeek race intake pipe (replaces TB), and Supersprint downpipe will yield more power...150-160 WHP and 300+ft-lbs of torgue to the wheels.
All of this great power & torque, and still maintaining 40+ MPG!
So don't ever let anyone tell you the TDI is slow!

To somewhat answer you paint question...
If you haven't done it before, and you want it done right, save your pennies and have the prfessionals do it.
Here are some reference pages, and there are plenty of books out there to help you with this, you just have to search for them. http://www.neilslade.com/Papers/Painting.html http://www.carcraft.com/howto/24820/

Nope; chipped 1.8Ts make at LEAST 700hp; add in a BOV, CAI, and some chrome exhaust tips and a 1.8T will embarass any orange-and-decaled Supra at the strip. Then you get into the knee-awn and stee-kas, oh man you'd be smokin'...respect!!!
A stolen VR6 can't even compare! Werd! WOOT! 1.8T NEvaR LOses!!!(?)!!!
