Simple question. Why did you buy a Volkswagen? For me it was simple, my sisters wanted a Jetta. So it was handed down to me. I'm not complaining, it's a good car if it is a bit femenine and a bit slow.
But how about you? Why did you buy a VW, what did you like about it as compared to cars in the price range. For those of you who bought an R32, what did you like more about than say it's Japanese counterparts like the new Evo and STi?
For those of you who bought GTI's, Golfs, Jetta, Passats, and Beetles, what was better about it than other cars you considered. Please include what you liked about VW's performance wise over other cars as well.
Please feel free to tell us what it was that made you choose the VW over other similar choices.
(And for those of you who own something other than a VW, feel free to tell us your motivations to buying that car.)
I wanted an eclipse 95-99 for a while, but my friend bought one of the first 2003 1.8t's off the lot in my area and after I rode in it, I wanted it. Plus I got a pretty good deal because they were making room for the 2004's when I bought my 2003. It was either going to be a 1.8t for 15k or a vr6 for 22k. Considering my budget, I went for the 1.8. I love it. Especially because 90% of my friends have civics or focuses and they'll never catch me . Plus the mod list seems endless for the 1.8.

I decided that my next car had to be turbocharged so a '98 or '99 eclipse GS-T was my first priority but the problems with crank-walk kind of scared me away from them. The SRT-4, 1.8T, and the Mazdaspeed Protegi (sp?) were the only new turbocharged engines available. Mazda's engine was too weak, the SRT-4 is still a neon, so the only logical choice was VW, plus it has huge aftermarket support.
First my annoying side: This probably should have been posted in General Volkswagen Section, but moving on...
Well, I was stuck with getting a new car because my family wanted me to have a reliable car for college. Being a former Honda tuner (yes, they can be tastefully modified) I originally wanted a CRX SiR, one of which had just been imported into Seattle: Awsome blue color and only around 30,000mi on the ticker. It was right-hand drive as well (which would be pretty cool; imagine driving around, catching the glimses people would give you ). Well, it sold before I could scrounge up the funds, as well as the fact that my family wanted me to get a new car, so I started looking.
Again, being Honda tuner this is where I turned. Since Honda discontinued the Prelude (so said ) I was forced to look at the new Civic Si. On look and I knew I would never own that car; I was simply shocked how ugly it was (I liked the interior though, especially the shifter location; it may look stupid, but it fit the driving position perfectly). Next I moved up to the Acura RSX. Definitely nice, but still something didn't quite sit right with me about the appearance (the price was a little high as well). So I continued looking...
Next I caught word of Dodge's new SRT-4: I read it was fast and priced right, so I looked past appearance for a bit. I was impressed with the front mount intercooler and the exhaust, and simply loved the seats, but there was something about the car (mainly the interior) that just turned me off. So again, I continued looking...
Then my Mom suggested taking a look at Volkswagens. I kind of shrugged it off (never being a big VW lover, although I had wanted a Mk2 GTI about a year before) but I agreed to go look at one. Stopped by the local VW dealer, was offered a test drive and didn't decline. Took out a GTI VR6 24V and I really liked it: fluid power from start is a beautiful thing, and it handled pretty nice as well. I loved the interior, and the exterior quickly grew on me; I was in love.
Then I test drove a 1.8T and fell for the turbo spool and surge of power (the lower price didn't hurt either). So I just had to convince my family that it was the right choice, which wasn't too hard: just push it off as a mini-station wagon with two doors (there is a lot of room in the back for hauling my stuff to and from college) which gets excelllent gas mileage as well (hey, ya gotta do what you gotta do ).
Anyway, I have continued falling in love with almost everything with my car over the past months, and I have really grown fond of the great community surrounding VWs; who knows, perhaps I am here to stay...
When I bought mine, I was looking at WRX's, and VW's. I liked the WRX, but had always been a dubber which made me lean towards my Jetta. Plus the insurance difference was enough to seal the deal.
I don't know if my next daily driver will be a VAG though sadly enough. I may end up selling for a truck or other 4wd vehicle and then also a MKII. I want a MKII w/ a blown motor for a project. I would probably put some sort of a 20v frankenstein motor into it...............

I find a lot, not all, but quite a few VW ladies will not wave back.
Maybe they think we are trying to hit on them or something.....which we are, but it's also to say "Hey fellow Volkswagen driver, what is up player".
My wife says the same thing though about other female VW drivers.

Man - the other day I actually got negative love from a dubber. I was crusing along 101 and there was there were THREE other galactic blue jettas all right around me. There were 2 in front of me right next to each other so I passed them and gave em a quick honk honk to say whats up and not only did neither wave - one of them flipped me off!!! I'm not sure if they thought I was being a jerk but I was just trying to be friendly to fellow galactic blue jetta owners. But also lately I was playing follow the leader with an A6 2.7T on 16 and he gave me the 4 way flash before I got off at my exit - nice to see some love from our Audi big brothers.
First off let me qualify this... I am a DIE HARD Honda fan and tunner... I have 2 current Honda/Acura projects right now... however... there is is something lacking from the Honda tunning community... and that is community... in the world of import tunning there is no more compeditive group of tunners with a mine is better than yours i have better crap more stickers and a general BING BING mentality... on the flip side... VW tunners tend to be more on the Enthusiast side of the track loving to see anyone with a VW tunned of stock... no mater whether it is a '69 AirCooled Bug or a '04 R32 both will see the other and go DAMN that shit is GANGSTER... where as a guy with a 2004 S2000 will laugh at a guy running a '89 CRX with a all motor LS/VTEC that has WAXED HIS ASS instead of just giving props where props are due make you look like a piece of shit because you admire his car and he sees yours as a piece of shit... (sorry got kinda personal there)... but the general comunity is amazing and i appreciate all Dubs...
Well that is the basic run down gotta love those DUMBY DOMES IN THE VDUBS
Originally, VWs were off the map for me, and Chrysler muscle cars/trucks were in. I restored a 1976 Dodge Stepside, and following that, built a 413HP 1973 Dodge Challenger. Then I went to VW school following my graduation from tech school (and a year of college) and my assigned car to work on at school was a Jetta VR6. Fell in love with the engine, wanted it in Manual GTI form. After VW school, went to work for a dealer. Some dude traded in his Matchstick Red GTI GLX VR6 for a GTI 337 when they first came out. As soon as it appeared at the dealership, I asked about it, found out what the deal was, and bought it. Got it for what they paid for the car, which was an excellent deal. Been happily modifying it ever since, and it puts a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel.
WOW,Much Like Carson I was a Die Hard Muscle/Pony Car Man(Mostly GM's) I Loved'Em All(Camaro,TransAm,Vette and a 'Stang)!! Well to make a Long Story Short These NJ Winters were Killing Me,My Car Would Sit All Winter Till We had a Nice Day!! So I Sold My Vette on Ebay and Instantly Started Looking at a Mitsu GST/GSX, but the More I Started Looking the More I Got Frustrated($1000.00 Timing Belts,Cheap Easy Bending Wheels and VERY Costly Repairs)!! One Saturday I Took a Ride to the Local VW Dealership with the Intent of Getting a Beetle and I saw a 2001 VW Golf in Jazz Blue and I was SOLD!! I Did'nt Even have to Test Drive it!! The Funny Thing was When I Bought it it was Exactly what I was looking for a Great Driver w/Good Miilage and Fun to Drive and had No Intent of Moding it,Well 1 Month Later and I Keep Getting More and More Into It and have Purchased a Few Mod's and I'm Always Looking for More!! I Must Say This is My FIRST Import Car and I Would BUY Another VW in a Second!! I Hope it is the Start of Great Things to Come!! Hey but I know Me,I'm Sure a ZR-1 May be in My Future(LOLjavascript:emoticon(''),Love Those Torque Monsters) but I Will Always have a New Found Respect For VW's and Their Drivers!!!!!
