Default 99 Beetle No speedometer or odometer, good tach and fuel gauge

I just bought a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0 Gas with an automatic transmission. The speedometer is not working. Neither is the odometer. Gas gauge and tach seem to be fine. Checked fuses. All good. Replace all three speed sensors on the transmission, one at a time. The drive gear for the rear most VSS was fine too. Still no speedometer. When I got the car, I had a P0501 code (vehicle speed sensor A Range/Performance). Reset the light. Still no speedometer. Hooked up a tech 2 scan tool to it and graphed the speed. The scanner had a working speedometer but the car did not. Do not think it is the speed sensors on the wheel because I would have an abs light on too, but I don't. Did the actual gauge cluster go bad? Can I test wires at the instrument cluster to see if its good there? If I replace the instrument cluster will it show the milage of my car or the car I took it from? Thanks. Joe JoeyDi84@msn.com

I would look for a new cluster, or check the wiring behind the cluster. The mileage will come from the cluster, not the ecu.

Clean the multi pin connector and socket behind the Instrument cluster with alcohol and a soft brush then check any grounds behind the dash and fuse/relay panel. If you are really savvy -open the cluster and inspect the solder joints for cold joints.

I would say you got a better than 50/50 shot of fixing the problem if you do this stuff before buying the Cluster.

Replace all three speed sensors on the top of the tranny, one at a time and no fix. Then Replaced the cluster, no fix. The wheel speed sensor dont compute the speedometer does it? How come it shows up on my scan tool and not the speedometer? I'll check the connections and grounds here in a little but. Lunch time.
