Climate Control Switch

1999 beetle
A/C worked great until started the car at lunch today.
I turned on a/c to 5 (high) and the air barely blew, turned it back to 1 (off) but it only turned down to 3 and wouldnt go any further toward the off position... turned it back to 5 and still blew slow... turned back and forth between 3, 4 and 5 and same thing. I wiggled it and it would start to blow high for a sec then drop low again...really weird. Still would not go lower than 3...
After several minutes of fiddling with it, it just stopped blowing air all together, and then the switch dial turned easily to off.
Tried the a/c button in and out, knob up and down, and no more light comes on.
Checked all fuses both on dash and on battery and all check out ok.
Someone mentioned replaceing the switch in the center dash???
If that could be the problem, how to go about it?? anyone have a diagram or DIY? Or any other possabilities what the problem may be??
