Default Factory Radio-2000 Beetle turbo

My girlfriends 2000 Beetle has the basic cassette player head unit in it (without Monsoon). It was recently damaged and needs replacing. Would I be able to buy the basic factory CD player head unit (without monsoon) and have it plug in and work with the factory wire harnesses with no problems?

Also, the only basic factory CD players (without monsoon) I'm able to find right now are from 2006-2008ish. I know beetle parts between '98 and '05 are cross compatible, but wasn't sure if the radios changed in the newer models or not. They look the same, but I don't know if they are compatible (wiring, features, etc.) If anyone knows about this as well, that would be a huge help.

Thanks guys.

you should be able to use one. you will need the radio code for it i believe. non monsoons might not need a radio code but im not axactly sure. check ebay. ive bought a factory monsoon radio for $75 with the radio code.

I'm pretty sure it will still need the code, as most of the ones I find on eBay say they come with the code.

And you think the radio's from the mid to later 2000's should still work, too?

We installed a later Monsoon CD/MP3-player VW-refurbished head-unit last fall in our 2000 VW New Beetle with no problem (eBay vendor; it took three tries to get a working unit); we just entered the radio code and it works great!

According our local VW dealer, you cannot purchase new Monsoon CD/Mp3-player head-units; instead you can only buy refurbished head-units. The refurbished head-units run about $450/each at the VW dealer. If you don't have a "core" (i.e., a currently failed) head-unit, it'll run you a very dear $1450/each...

I guess my main question would be, is the wiring harness the same between '98-'05 and '06-'09? If it is, I don't see a problem. If anyone can tell me that, it would be a huge help. Thanks for all the info already guys.
