The headlight assembly was stolen from my 98 Beetle. Is this a simple repair or does it require a shop? A friend has offered to replace it (I will order the part). I really do not want him to go crazy doing this if it is a huge pain.
Also, is there a way to put the headlight assembly in that makes it difficult to tamper with. This happened in broad day light on a busy street, so I am feeling a bit paranoid.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I think snipers on the top of every building is the answer. I'd like to think if they are so easy to take out that they must be pretty easy to put in. That really sucks though man - sorry to hear that. Was it both headlights or just one? And is your insurance covering the bill?
Just the one (thankfully), but the doofus did try to rip out the other one, because the other one has been tampered with.
Funny you saying that if it is so easy to rip out it should be easy to replace. I called a mechanic for a quote and the quote was $440.00. I have a $500.00 deductible on my insurance (so, no they will not be covering it).

Your comprehensive is 500? Usually comprehensive is set to ~100 and collision is set to 500. Call more mechanics OR do it yourself. If this guy is a "doofus" and could get it out you should be able to figure out how to get it back in - it can't be that hard - I bet someone on here could even provide you with instructions. Is that 440 qoute parts AND laobor?
Yes, $500.00!! I spoke to the insurance company today. I ordered the part and my friend (who is mechanically inclined ) and I will try to install it.
I am worried because the wiring is ripped and there are broken plastic parts. I just hope that the assembly I ordered will remedy these problems (somehow) if not I am really up the creek. I am not in the mood to pay through the nose for this thing.
The quote today was for parts and labor. He said the parts were $327.00 for the assembly and $14.00 for the bulb (ha ha). I ordered the assembly for less than 161.00 (including shipping). I really do not understand mechanics. Are they just so convinced that the general public is this stupid?
Any chance you can post pics of the damage? I would try and source the new headlamps from the aftermarket, as it will most likely be cheaper than the dealer. As long as the reciever assembly in the vehicle hasn't been damaged, the new ones will just go in, otherwise, you will have to replace the reciever assembly.
