Default help with timing PLEASE!

so yea, ive been messing around the past two days trying to get this thing started. (my pg/aba/turbo project) and i havent had any luck. im somewhat screwed because the PO (jack that he is ) desided he didnt need the timing belt cover. so i dont have anything to line it up with. (i'm geussing i should use the mark on the flywheel since i dont have the cover anymore?) to line up the crank. (a bitch since im doing this myself) now the trouble ive been having is that ive been going by g60 timing. so now that i have a aba head i geuss i have to free ball a little. how should i line up the cam? (using a stock aba one) and the dist should be at 1oclock for TDC with the mark on the rotor just to the right of the top of it. correct? any help would be greatly appericated. i pay in cash and pizza if anyone wants to come over and help

There should be a small round mark on the head side of your cam pulley, line it up with the top of the head (valve cover surface of the head in front of the cam). Then the lower pulley mark and intermediate shaft mark together same as all 8V. And your right about the dist timing, but most importantly just make that at TDC the rotor is pointing to cylinder 1 plug wire (there is a mark in the distributor body). Once all the marks are lined up double check that the flywheel mark is also where it should be.

when i line up the marks on the crank and inter shaft. the dist is at 5-6oclock. that doesnt seem right. also i dont have a mark on the head side of my cam. i'm still using a g60 crank and intermediate shaft. with aba head and cam.

Put on the G60 cam sprocket . Thats odd though ABA and all 92 and older 1.8L use the exact same cam sprocket (same part#) the mark should be there.

Anyway the dist rotor position is wrong it should be at about the 1:00 position when at TDC, somehow you are about 180 out. If you are not sure set flywheel at TDC line up cam then with timing belt off of int shaft rotate int shaft untill dist rotor lines up with cyl 1 mark on dist body (hall plug should be roughly at 3:00 to 4:00 position, when looking at the engine from the front of the car. )

TDC is when cyl 1 (the piston nearest the dist) is all the way extended, correct? jw because i pulled the plug on it and put a screw driver down there and the piston is actually higher when its not at the marked spot. my intermediate shaft was off when i lined that oo. so does this mean i should go by the marks? what the hell should i do?

Cyl #1 is the first cylider on the passenger side. TDC would be when that piston is all the way up and the TDC mark on the flywheel is visible in the bellhousing at the pointer in the center of the hole (there should be a mark on the crank pulley too that will be pointing to a mark in the T-belt cover, if its on of course). On G60 you are actually supposed to set the crank at TDC, allign the cam gear mark with the head and, with the distributor removed turn the int shaft gear to allign the oil pump lug parallel to the crank, Then re-install the distributor. This will get the distributor housing so it is turned correctly with the rotor pointing to the 1 o:clock position. Keep in mind there should be two marks on the flywheel the actuall TDC mark and about a half inch in front of it (if standing on the driver side looking at the flywheel the second mark will be to the left of the main TDC mark) there should be another mark this should be roughly 8 Degrees BTDC. Make sure you have it at TDC mark not 8 Degrees BTDC. Also the mark on the ABA gear on the head side is just a dot not a line.

still no dice, wont start, i couldnt find the marks on the flywheel and i have no t-belt cover. i stuck a long screw driver in the 1st cyl and made sure that piston was as high as it was going to go. lined up the cam (i put the g60 cam sprocket on) and lined up the dist to 1oclock and put the mark just to the right of it. whats going on here?

Well if everything is lined up correctly, even if its off a little it should still sputter and at least sound like its making an attempt to start, Have you checked to see if you are even getting spark from the coil?
