Default 1970 Repair Manual?

I have a Repair or I should say service manual for my
2000 Jeep TJ Wrangler
1998 Jeep XJ Cherokee
1974 Toyota Land Cruiser actually my buddy's because I'm helping him rebuild.

Anyways is there or did VW make a Service manual that is detailed that is available to the common joe? I'm looking to tear down my wifes first car 1970 Beetle and well I'd like to know torque values of things. I'd like to start with removing the motor and completely tearing it apart and giving it an overhaul. I do remember seeing rebuild kits in the past. Would be nice to convert it from a dual port 1600 to a dual port 1776. Rake the front some and some other things.

Does anybody have a source?

Never mind I did a bit of searching and realized they are not very hard to find.

Thanks DB,

I actually have the book floating around somewhere. I actually looked at it a few times to keep it up and running. Its been parked since 2000 when I bought my Jeep. http://www.links4jeeps.com/members/kizer/

I've gone from wanting to build a Beetle to playing in the rocks with my Jeep. Well Ive come full circle after 7years of ignoring my wifes Beetle and well I want a little street ride so I can show up the H20 boys. Well not literally, but I can at least pretend to.

I like to shoot photos and document things I do. This is what I started on a buddys Toyota Land Cruiser Transfer case (2wheel/4wheel drive shifter and its nearly done so I'd like to do the same with the beetle. http://www.iamkizer.net/kevin/ Sure it would take up probably a DVDs worth of pictures, but hey maybe somebody else would get a good kick out of it when I'm done as well I've learned from experience that you must take photos and good notes to make sure when you take something apart you can figure out how it goes back together.

Heres a few pictures of the Rotten banana peal. aka "Herbert" It used to be bright yellow, but over time it faded and I thought it was a good idea to cover all bare metal spots to keep it from rusting. I think I might actually do up a running restoration type of thread/writeup on my website just for the hell of it.

Like I said I'd really like to rebuild him, but at the sametime I'd like to modernize him some:
Get rid of the drum brakes and go discs at least in the front
Change out the ignition because honestly I hate points
More comfortable seats
Those few are well just a few. I haven't opened up a Bug mag in 7+ years so who knows whats available any more.

I'll pop in now and then simply because I will have questions and honestly I'm here to learn all over again.

2180CC engine (bored and stroked), hot cam, headers / stinger exhaust, dual Weber's or DelOrtos, I'd run a .009 distributor but you said you hate points - so I guess modify one for a HAL sensor (out of another Bosch vehicle, perhaps?), Bosch blue or red coil - that'd pretty much take care of the engine.
Adjustable front beam (so you could rake / unrake at your pleasure)
Pair of seats out of a GTI
Vintage Hurst shifter
Widened steelies on the back
Stock steelies on the front
hot-rod black paint (flat black)

Build the engine right and you'll be able to give the ricerboys one heck of a run for their money.

(heh ... looks like I described a '64 on a late pan that I owned years ago!)
