The first year for the super beetle was 1971. I they continued to make the standard beetle until 2003 (in fact, I was in a VW dealership in Mexico in 2001, it was really cool to see brand new air cooled beetles in the showroom!) , but I think the last year it was sold in the states was 1977 (although it might have been a year or two earlier).
