Default equalizer spring control rods

I'm a newbie to the aircooled scene, Just bought a '68 bug. Cleaning up chassis and underside, changing shocks when I noticed on the rear end the equalizer spring on the chassis had the control (guide rods?) cut off!!! Spring just hangs there!! Should I worry? Is it neccessary for safe proper operation? If so, where do I find replacement rods? I've searched everywhere I can think of and no luck! Thanx! Scott

Thanx guys, that's what I'll do. It is a swingaxle, there is a perch for the rod to mount on the axle tube. A hole for a rubber bushing that the rod runs through. Scott

After checking on some other help sites & tech tips found best suggestion to be a camber compensator and get rid of equalizer spring altogether. Not worried about being correct, from what I read the compensator does a much better job. Anyone else had any experience with these? Thanx! Scott

Not a bad plan. Camber gets pretty out of control on those things if you rail into a turn. I guess it kinda depends on what you want to do with the car.

Some of the guys out there dragging pan are big into the eight degrees of camber thing because it's the only way they can fit full height tires under the rear fenders and still run that low... and if you don't have tall tires you aren't going the speed limit. I'm not sure if you can really get low with a camber compensator on there.

You certain it's a '68 pan? If so it should have the 4 joint rear - not the 2 joint swing-axle. If you're running 12V stock it sounds like you've got a '67 that's been mis-titled as a '68 OR somebody put a good '68 body on an older pan! The VIN should be stamped onto the tunnel under the back seat - you should be able to establish the vintage of the pan by translating it -
The vintage of the pan may matter for the front end as well - didn't VW switch from king pins to balljoints starting on the 1966 model year? so if the pan is a '65 your front end will be different from a 68 as well.

Best of luck -

Steve
