Default generator or alternator?

how can you tell a generator from an alternator by looking at it?

A generator is a round cylinder shape, like a can.

Let's see if I can put a picture in words. An alt is larger diameter right behind the belt pulley then tapers off to a cylinder shape while a gen is the same size front to back.
