Default Lost key

Greetings all, first time on the boards...Have a problem, and I'm hoping someone here may be able to help me out.

I'm the owner of a 1972 Beetle, and have been having problems. It was bought from a used car dealership, and drove wonderfully for about a week. After a week or so, I was cruising over to a friends house, not pushin it or anything...when the engine started to sputter a little. I thought it may have been because it was still a little cold, and decided to see if it would go away with a mile's drive or so. However...about a mile down the road, the engine started sputtering badly, and after about half a second of it...a giant cloud of white smoke appeared behind me, and I coasted to the side of the road. Now, I believe the problem to be the fuel pump, but I'm not sure...and until recently I had no means of purchasing anything to fix the beetle. Now I'm in a position to purchase whatever I need, but I'm not quite sure what that may be. I have a 1971 Beetle sitting in the back yard, with a servicable motor, but the rest of it is fairly well shot. Anyway, this is a little background on my current issue.

The issue is, that the key for my beetle has somehow dissappeared, and I can't find it. I've been through everything. I didn't have the spare, I didn't get around to making one in the short time I was driving it. I can't get a locksmith to drive out here, so I'm having to take the ignition or door handle in to him to have a key made. The problem is, I don't know how to remove either. I have the book "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" By John Muir. I've looked all through the book, but can't find any procedure to remove the ignition or the door handle, and I've looked all over the internet to no avail. So here is where you guys come in... Can anyone tell me how to remove either the ignition or the door handle? Anything that would solve this issue? Or can anyone point me in the right direction to get the information I'm seeking?

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for any replies.

Josiah
