Alright, here is one of those posts who die-hard VW guys will be shaking thier heads laughing at.
I just picked up my first air-cooled Volkswagen project, a basket case but complete 1963 Beetle. I don't know a whole lot about parts interchange. It didn't have an engine, but I did get a 1967 1500cc from a friend. The engine didn't have any tin on it, but it did have the intake, distributor, etc.
My question here is, what do I need to change on that 1500cc to put it into my bug? I know they changed it from a 6-volt in '67, but I am planning to just rebuild the stock 6-volt wiring harness. Can I use the distributor, carb, and sensors that are on the block? What generator should I use? Also, what do I need to do about the clutch and pressure plate? Should I use the stock '63 stuff, or do I need to use '67 parts? (it has the original tranny that I am going to get rebuilt). And lastly, what engine tin should I put back on it?
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated here. E-mail me at
