Odd vin number help

I recently purchased a 1964 beetle - the ownership does not unfortunately correspond with the ownership. It did have a frame off restoration but the odd thing the vin number on the chasis under the back seat is 8489742 but from all I the research I have done the highest 7 digit vin number is 6502399. Can anyone explain what that vin number means??? Would sure appreciate it. Thanks

Still trying to figure this out as that vin number does not exist - looking on line for pics of vin numbers under the seat the ones I see are stamped there my 64 has a rivited plate and the numbers look very new compared to some of the ones I have seen stamped on the internet. Are all vin numbers stamped? or do any of you guys have vin numbers rivited on or are they all stamped on the chasis?

welcome. sounds like you have a state assigned VIN. All VW VIN were stamped under the back seat.Around 1969-70 they started putting the VIN up near the windshield on a rivited tag. Starting in 1965 VW went with a different # system which the 3rd number in sequence gave you the year.
What does the title say 1964?

The title states it is a 1964 and according thesambia.com website it was built in Feb 1964. But I have been told that the vin is stamped on the chasis where as mine is a small plate that is riveted to the chasis under the rear seat and the vin is 2 million higher than the highest 7 digit vin number. Believe I will remove the plate and see what vin is under there. Have no idea why anyone would put a plate and a fake vin over top.

So how did you determine that it was built in Feb. 1964?
There is also a rivited VIN tag under the spare tire in the wheel well area. Does the long VIN match anything on the car or title?

Good news is we removed the plate that was riveted on the chassis on top of the vin and the engraved vin matches the ownership, for some reason the guy who did the frame off made a plate with serial number from the orginal engine and riveted it over the chassis vin. So I so relieved to have a proper ownership and car, Thanks for you help.
