Default Chrome mirror caps from VWoA

I realize these are nothing new to the VW community. I also suspect that these are the same In-Pro mirror caps that have been available through the aftermarket for several years. What is unusual is that VWoA has claimed to have this accessory "under development" for quite a while and has finally decided to release them now, as the Mk4 cars are reaching the end of thier production run.

VW part# 1J5-072-530-1ZL msrp $149.00pr.

Since VWoA has yet to offer any promotional info on these, the exact fitment applications are still a little grey to me. I know for a fact that they will fit all German-production Mk4 Golfs, GTIs, R32s, Jetta wagons, and Passats(98>03).

.....and you read it here first, on VWF

I have thought about these for the R for some time now...maybe if some extra cash is lying around I'll pick up a set.

No, the only place I've ever seen them was in an old, dealer-only accessories brochure. They most likely look exactly like the In-Pro chrome mirror covers that replace the painted mirror caps. Actually, I don't really expect VWoA to promote them since they won't fit many of the Mexican and Brazilian made vehicles. I found them by accident, listed in ETKA in the accessory section of the Jetta wagon. I was suprised to find that VWoA currently has about 150 pairs of the caps in thier NJ warehouse. VWoA has yet to release any parts bulletins to the dealer network about thier existence.

Not necessarily. The Mexican & Brazilian made cars were assembled with outer mirrors from 2 different vendors. You'll have to disassemble your LH mirror to find out which one you have. If you find part#s beginning with "1J1" or "3B0", the chrome caps should fit. However, if the part#s begin with "1JE" or you find the vendor name "Metagal".....then you're SOL.

On another note......
I should mention that even though VWoA has the chrome caps in NJ, they are buried away in a "seabox" in thier national redistribution center. Any US dealer will be able to take an order for you, but the turn around time could be a week or two since they have not been unpacked and put to shelf in the main warehouse.
