Default Rare MK1s

Anyone on here who knows me knows I still live for MK1s. They're just cool to me. Over the years there have been a few MK1s that I wanted... bad.

The '75 Swallowtail was the first one on the list. First year production, fairly rare. I found one in '02 and snatched it right up. I've been slowly (six years now) aquiring the parts to build it into a prepped roadcourse car.

Shortly after that I decided I needed a Rabbit S. This one would be a little more difficult considering all my searching has, to this day, yealded me only seeing five of these cars in person (traveled to Canada to see one, found one at an auction, one in a wrecking yard and nearly crapped when I saw one on the street). I found this one on accident, bought it and restored it for my wife.

So those are old news... this thread is really about the MK1 I got last night. The rarest of the rare. It's a counterpart to the Rabbit S and since we have a Rabbit S we just HAD to have one of these. There may be less than 5-6 of these in the whole community and probably only a few dozen in the world (I've seen three in person, Dave at oldskool, a local one that runs about, and mine)... and after years of searching... I own one.

So long story short. I'm bragging... but this is the showoff section so I get to enjoy a little gloating every now and again. I own three of the rarest MK1s ever built. I'd say the French Golf 16s is the rarest but I think it's possible they actually made fewer Sportrucks.

That is pretty awesome, Aaron. Pretty much a GTI in Caddy form, right?

Nice Aaron I wonder if you guys on the otherside of the country got shortchanged on how many rabbits/gti/trucks that made their way out there. Even though you don't see a tremendous amount of MK1's around anymore you still will see your fair share of them in this area. You know they used to make them here in Pa. As far as the trucks I remember there was an older guy in Columbia(Lancaster county)that had at one point no less than 12 trucks! several being the Sport Truck if you can beleive that. I myself owned 2 of them a gas and a deisel, a little cramped inside but they were pretty cool

Thanks everyone. The Sportruck got the GTI console, red stripe instrument surround, a duckbill and a tach along with the decals... otherwise it was fairly standard. It was basically a Rabbit S truck with graphics.

As far as overall MK1 rarity... this is my 21st MK1. I currently own four. Rare VWs are certainly location specific. Montana Green 2L 16v GTIs for example... there are virtually none here at all yet I saw two at H2O and know a guy in Utah who owns two and had no idea they were rare. There's only supposed to be something like 1500 of them.

Thats awesome stuff. The more I drive my mk1 that ive had for a year or so and see mk1s, the more I like them over any other platform, so simple. Cool cars.

Initial purchase prices, yes.

The '75 was $200
Leslie's Rabbit S was $100
Sportruck was traded for a MK2 I paid $300 for

Mountain bike. Bianchi S.A.S.S. single speed. Street bikes fit... barely.

Montana Green 16vs... 8vs are common enough. The one 400hp 16v Monty we built started out as a $300 8v shell.
