Default 2000 - AUDI TT 1.8T 2WD - STRANGE PROBLEM - PLEASE HELP!

Hello,

I was hoping someone here could possibly explain something that is currently going on with my Audi TT. Whenever I quickly release my foot from the gas; a loud and annoying *CRACK* or *CLICK* like sound omits from the rear of the chassis. I've taken it to a mechanic and they aren't sure what is causing the car to make this sound. But it is driving me nuts!

The car only has around 75,000 miles on it.

Example:

If you were to drive down the street. Put it in 2nd gear and repeatedly take your foot on and off the gas as it coasts - you will hear this CRACK/CLICK sound each time your foot leaves the gas pedal.

As you can imagine; this is starting to get real annoying because everytime I take my foot off the gas to shift - I hear it. It sounds like the chassis is "cracking its back" for lack of a better way to put it.

Now, what is even more bizarre - is that it comes and goes. I've had the car for about 2 years. It started at around month 8 (40,000 miles), lasted till around month 12 (50,000 miles). Disappeared for 8 months - and has now returned again! (75,000 miles)

Has anyone else experienced any problem like this with their TT? My mechanic told me to, "Turn up the music." So you can imagine how pissed off I am about that reaction to my problem.

I know what you're thinking, "Take it to the dealer."

Unfortunately, that is not an option for me right now. So if anyone can help me identify the problem, I would really appreciate it.

Take care,

Garrett

Not sure if this is your problem, but when you go over speed bumps, does it also make this noise? I know a lot of people with myself included, a lot of people with 2001 models have this noise and is one of a few things, it's either the doors that need to be lubbed up, or the strut bar up front or in the rear need to be lubbed up. Here is a link that has it in more detail. Hopefully this will help some.

I dont' think that would be it, since he has a 2WD model, the rear setup is completely different. I have no idea what it could be honestly...it's weird that it's ONLY when you take your foot off the gas. I'm thinking just the motion of the engine braking causes something to rattle in a certain way...? Have someone sit in your back seat and listen to where it's coming from maybe...?

Thanks guys.

No, I only hear the *CRACK* sound when I release the gas pedal to shift gears and only in low gear action. I don't hear it when I shift from 4th to 5th.

I am starting to think that it might be either the shocks or struts. Is this possible?

If so, any idea how much it would cost to replace the shocks and struts on this vehicle?

Thanks again,

Garrett

I have had several customers come with a single creaking or clicking noise at times. Going over bumps or accelerating/decelerating. I have found it to be a broken weld at the center support on the intermidiate pipe. It is hard to see unless you really look close. Not sure if this might be the cause on yours since you say yours is loud , but I would check it out.

i hear a creeking noise on my a4 avant, i know its obviously different from a tt but i've heard it can be caused by sway bar bushings, where is this intermediate pipe support so i can investigate or is this "intermediate pipe" problem on tt's only?
