Default Knocking Noise From Back of Car

I have this knocking/tapping noise that comes from the back of my car when I am not moving, I also had it in my Jetta. Seems to be only when I'm not moving, I have even noticed it when the car is off. Never heard it in the GTI, but I did regularly in the GLI and the TT. Any ideas?

We had this discusion on a TT forum i'm on. One theory is that the TT-225 has an inverted "U" gas tank. Because of this design the fuel level in each half must be equalized to give an accurate reading for the fuel gauge.

Here's the link from audiworld.

Well I'm glad it's not just me. Does yours do it? The gas tank explanation seems to make the most sense so far, none of the other explanations there would replicate the noise mine is making in the situations it's making it in.

Well I can deal with the noise, as long as I know it's nothing wrong. Engine noise I don't worry so much about, but something from the back of the car confused me

I put it in MK4 because it did it in my Jetta too and the TT is on the MK4 chassis.

I've the same problem on my A6 (1995 ~225000Km) the problem can resides in the wheel bearings (as supposed here)
In my case if I drive on an highway at about 140Km/h for about an hour the problem disappear but it re-appears when I return to drive at about 50Km/h
