Default New to VWF and VW.

Hey everyone. Name is Kevin. I'm purchasing a 1999 VW Jetta GLS TDI this week and I want to get a head start on learning about this car. First thing I'll do is oil change, I don't care if the guy I'm buying from just did one or not, I like to do it myself to know for sure. I'll take some pictures of the car when I get it (this weekend probably). Any tips and/or advice you guys can give me? It has 120k miles on it but I figure it's got alot more to go if i'm lucky and keep things running smoothly. I'm mainly buying it for the gas mileage but I might end up putting a little money into improving performance later on. This is my first german car as well. Only other car I've had that I actually spent alot of time and money on was a 96 Dodge Neon. It's time for a change. Thanks ahead of time.

I had a 97 neon. Did you spend alot of time and money on it because you fixed it up, or because it was always broken? Mine was the Latter. Blew a head gasket at 32K miles, and again at 44K. I hated that car.

sorry to hear that. i spent the money on it fixing it up a little. i actually never had any big problems. The CAI i had on it was weird, it made the filter end up being below the car and almost touching the ground because i had it lowered about 3 inches and it got clogged up pretty often. Thats the only problem i had but it was partially my fault. I want an SRT-4 but they are so hard to find around here.

There is a guy on here that is selling a track-ready SRT-4. Check the classifieds.

There are not too many, if any, TDI guys/girls on this forum, but here is a page with FAQs about TDIs:

http://tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/

I've browsed it before and it seems to have lots of useful information.

Welcome to VWF and the wonderful world of VWs!

when i worked at a jiffy lube type place we would put 15w40 synthetic in the diesel cars/trucks.
However Mobil 1 recommends 5w40 on the VW TDI's. http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/Mo.../Homepage.aspx

I personally would use either Mobil 1 or AmsOil in my car, but I am sure a synthetic oil is a synthetic oil
