2006 VW Jetta 2.5, wont start or shift into gear

I recently crashed my car and am looking to get it repaired, the only problem is i cannot get it to start or shift into gear. When the tow truck guy dropped it of at my house he said something about a release button that needs to be pushed or something to get the car to start. If anybody knows anything about this problem, i'd greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!!
