Default 2009 VW Jetta S or VW TDI

Hello guys,

I'm kinda torn between the two and here is my current situation.

I mainly drive in the city (one a suburb road that only has stop signs!) and i'm only 6 miles away from work. I usually would not drive the vehicle during the weekend as my wife and I normally drive my X5 around town.

I did the math on the VW Jetta S (5 speed man) and TDI (6 speed Man) and TDI costs me $3000 more. WIth me driving in the city i can probably only get 30MPG with the TDI and 20s with the regular Jetta. So i would make sense to get the Jetta S right. I would have to drive the TDI 3 years to break even.

Is it worth it to get the TDI? Also! TDIs are so rare in Houston , one has to literally do pre-orders to get one and that will cost a premium!

Thanks in advance!

Based on your driving, coupled with the price difference, the Jetta S would be a better option. However, the TDI will likely hold its resale value better. You will get your money back out of it and then some when it's time to sell. You will probably find that the TDI would sell much quicker as well. Bottom line is, if you want to save money now, buy the "S", if you can afford to and want to be in a better position when you're ready to replace it, get the TDI.

Good luck!

I wanted a TDI but all sold out here - also they are 3 to 4K more than the standard Jetta so you would need to put on a lot of miles to justify the addition - even though it may be interesting to have a diesel ! I got a Jetta with a 2.0T - unbelievable engine power/speed - very impressed and also good gas mileage.

Congrats! The 2.0TFSI is a sweet powerplant. Didn'y know it was available in the Jetta "S". Let me know if you are interested in any factory accessories. If you compare with the VW dealer, my prices are unbeatable. Have a great weekend and enjoy the new car!

The TDI is good if your going to be driving far. They get about 600 miles to the tank! you have to put in diesel with is good because it cost about the same as regular. The TDI over all is a green car with Horse power, you can also get back about $2k from the government because it is fuel efficient.

Ok guys.

I am a proud owner of a brand spanking new 2010 Jetta TDI 6-Speed Man in Salsa Red!

It is a dream to drive. I average about 40mpg already! This is first time that i drove 40 miles and the Fuel Guage did not even budge

My new task would now be getting the windows tinted

The 2010 has some really nice features but i haven't played with them yet. It's got Bluetooth, touch panel computer system display with Free Sirrus radio for 6 months.

I'm happy now

i'm in canada and have now owned a 2009 jetta tdi with manual tranny for almost 3 months, 5300km. it's a testimony to this car that i have put more km on it since i got it then i have with any of my last 3 vehicles (including a cadillac cts..the 2 prior mini-vans you can understand) it's getting amazing gas mileage now and what you can't factor into simply the difference in car prices for me is:

-peace of mind that even with all city driving in 28 days (yep a month) i still had fuel left when i filled up. i love having a vehicle that i simply can't remember filling the last time.

-in canada and where i live, regular gas is about 96.9 cents a litre..diesel, 86.9 cents a litre so there's another cost saving that's a bonus.

-i almost wish fuel prices would go up again for the bragging rights. if they go as high as they were over a year ago (in canada, 35-40% higher) i bet that cost ownership difference between the 2 narrows prettttttty fast!

only things i don't like..that you have to turn off the lights manually (that's just dumb in this day and age..my wife's 2008 civic is the same way..stupid) and that damn clutch..while i rarely do it, i still do occasionally stall it on launch!
