Default Hand and a Wrench Warning Light

As soon as I crank the engine on my 2009 Jetta a light featuring a wrench icon appears next the odometer. What is it?

it is the service interval reminder. its set to come on every 5,000 miles. basically just a oil change reminder light. you can reset it by
Insert key in ignition. Hold down "0.0", while holding... turn key to on position. Let up on "0.0", momentarily depress "min" on the opposited end of cluster.

My 2009 2.5 Jetta SE is set for a 10,000 mile service interval. I've seen others (a 2008 2.5) with a 5,000 mile interval. Just curious as to what other people have seen.

I don't let it go to 10,000 miles before changing the oil, but my miles remaining counts down from 10,000.

Default reset light

"hold down" on 0.0. Is 0.0 you mean the trip odometer?

The last time I had my oil changed on my MK5 was during the 40k service. Dealer told me to change oil every 10k miles. It now has 48,700 miles and the wrench light just came on this week. Thanks.

Default reset light

How do you reset the light after you change the oil?
Do I need a scan tool or code reader to turn off the light?

No fancy tools needed.

With the key in the off position, press and hold the 0.0 button
Turn the key to the "on" position
While still holding the 0.0 button, press the "min" button and the service light will be reset.
It's a little like a game of twister, but easily done.

To see miles remaining before service is due, with the engine off, turn the key to "on" then press and hold the 0.0 button. The trip will reset but KEEP holding the 0.0 and you will then see the miles remaining till service is due. KEEP holding the 0.0 and after about 5 seconds you'll see another number. I believe this is engine hours remaining till service is due.

When your done, let go of the 0.0 button and the trip odometer will return to the previous reading.

BTW this is for my 2009 Jetta 2.5 SE without the trip computer.

Default oil change interval

Mine is also a 2009 Jetta SE 2.5 L with a trip odometer. Dealer told me it goes 10k miles between oil changes.

It's time for my 50k service.

What type of synthetic oil is needed? Do I necessarily have to take it to the dealer for an oil change?

You can change it yourself, but VW is very specific about the type of oil to use.

I use Mobil1 0W-40
It's the only easily available oil that satisfies VW 502 spec. It's $6 - $9 per quart depending on where you buy it. Try Walmart for the best price. You need 7 quarts. 6.5 to fill the crankcase and a little left over.

Make sure to drain the filter cartridge before you remove the cover.

It costs me about $50 to change it myself. Don't know what VW would charge

Default 86 dollar oil change

$86 oil change at dealer. $100 for 50k service which includes oil change and tire rotation. Such expensive oil; good thing it needs changing every 10k miles instead of 3k miles.

Default $95 oil change at Precision Lube

$95 oil change at Precision Lube. Six quarts Fully synthetic Castrol 5W30 and OEM oil filter with coupon
I had no idea VWs would be so costly to maintain: $100 oil changes and $200 keys!
They didn't reset the service light so I did it with the tech tip from the moderator. Thanks.
