Default Random good start, hard start, no start

Hello. I've run into a rather perplexing problem with my 2006 Jetta 2.5, manual tranny, 63000mi, and all regular services at the dealership since I bought it in'09. For the past month it has had occasional hard starts where it turned over a few times more than usual. Also sprinkled in were starts where I had to make 2-3, 5-10 second start attempts before it would start. Most of the time it still fired up like a champ. Last night it would not start at all. I had to be somewhere, so I borrowed my roomate's truck for 2 hrs before I could look at it. When I turned the key to listen to what was going on it fired up right away again. I thought it might be a bad connection or ground, but everything is clean and tight. I don't have a voltmeter so until I borrow one I haven't been able to see the battery output. All the lights are just as bright as normal. On all the failed starts it makes rapid clicking, dash and interior lights come on, and I'm pretty sure it halfheartedly tries to turn over a few times. When it runs I don't notice any rough running or stalls. Since it's so random on how it behaves I'm not sure what it could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

If every hard start you are having has the rapid clicking sound, then the motor is not turning over.

That rapid clicking sound means that the battery doesn't have enough power to spin the starter motor.

Time to replace the battery.
