Default Saabs?

Anyone know if saab's are reliable? Pros and Cons?

ps: I know this isn't really the place but I figure some VW fans might be saab owners too.

thanks.

my mom and her boyfriend hit some black ice going around 45mph and went into a telephone pole in his old 9000 turbo and were unharmed

saabs get a thumbs up for me

New saabs are produced by GM, and are basically Subarus. From what I hear about them, they are pretty safe and reliable. The only thing I don't understand is why they have the ignition in the center console. I never could wrap my head around that.

My younger brother had one for a while, ran great with well over 150,000 miles on it (it was well maintained though), it was a NA 16valve though. Plus it was super easy to work on, and would have lasted longer if he kept it out of the woods. A mechanic I worked with a while back swore by his Saab's, he had 2 turbos that he drove regularly, and never seemed to have any issues.

I have an 05 92x aero (which is the subaru version) and I really like it. But like I said its basically a Subaru, all suby parts. The other Saabs from what I hear last pretty long, expecially the NA ones.

Thank you for all your replies. They've been really helpful.

I'm looking at a 1994 Saab 900 SE for $5,000 w/ 67,550 miles. Anyone know anything about these specifically?

Pretty simple. That way you dont get a key lodged into your leg in an accident.

My family is pretty big into Saabs. My dad had an 87 900S that he then gave to my brother and since then has had an 88 (I think) 900 SE Turbo Convertible (one of 660 made), and an 89 900 SPG which he currently still has.

There is a fairly stong following of the classic 900 Saabs and other older Saabs. They made the classic 900s uo until 93 for the coupes and 94 for the convertibles. When Saab changed over to the newer body style around 94 the cars did have many issues. They became more reliable since then from 94, but they were never considered good cars by the automotive public. And now they are just GMs with Saab badges. Lame. My brothers co-worker has a new 9-3 and has had many issues with it. The 9-2x is pretty cool though as it is basically a Subaru WRX and you get the japanese reliablity. They were having great deals on them too, not sure if you can get such a good deal anymore.

Anyway, IMHO they stopped making saabs after the classic 900 was discontinued. Like any older car, if you buy one there are bound to be problems, especially if someone that didnt know much about Saabs owned it before you. They are cool cars though with lots of weird quarks that make it a Saab. ignition in the center console, handbrake that activated the front brakes pre 86....

If you want info on Saabs check out this website, these people love their Saabs: www.saabnet.com

my friend has a 1995 900 and it has well over 130k on it and he just replaced the spark plugs for the first time. he never works on the car or pays any attention to the car. it is neglected and worked hard, and it has never had a problem or any costly repairs. they have had many saabs in their family and thats why he got his and they have never had any problem with any of them and they seem to be very reliable, hope this helps in some way

That is surprising. The early newer style 900s were known to be problems. I guess he must have gotten a good one. I hear the last few years of that body style were pretty solid cars though.
