Default 1.8T passat oil on sparkplug

I'm not very mechanically inclined when it comes to cars, esp VW. Here's the deal: Friday evening i started my Passat, the check engine light started flashing and the engine was sputtering. Saturday morning I took it to the mechanic, he recommended a fuel system flush and a tuneup, and that's what they did. The check engine light was being caused by a multiple cylinder misfire. During the tuneup the mechanic found oil on one or two (can't remember) of the spark plugs, he said it could be a very serious problem. He said it may be some coils that would be a $500-$600 repair or it could be an internal problem with the pistons or cylinders which would require the nose of the engine to be removed. There is no smoke coming out of the exhaust (i assume that would be a symptom if there was oil in the pistons). If i remember correctly, when he showed me the spark plug, the oil was on the tip. He told me to wait until Monday and take it to the dealership to diagnose it because he didn't want me to spend $500 on the coils if that wasn't the problem. He also said not to drive it until then. Would this be dangerous to drive to work Monday morning(5-6 miles)? Has anyone heard of this specific problem? Any help or recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

The coils for the ingition are about 35 bucks a piece and a fingerless 50 year old prostitute could do it with her eyes closed. It's a common problem with earlier passats with the 1.8T to have an oil sludge problem...otherwise it could be piston rings...it's hard to say for sure without knowing the maintenance records and without tearing the head off...
