whats wrong?

Last week my car was not wanting to start. I could turn the key a little wait for the lights and it would start. Then one day it would not start at all. I changed the battery and it worked for 3 days just fine. Then this morning it hesitated again. When I initially turn the key there are no dash lights. Then they come on and the car starts.
What could be wrong...Alternator? Ignition? Electrical Problem?
I dont' want to take it somewhere without knowing what could be wrong so if you have any answers please send them my way.

Sounds mostly like an intermitant problem in the ignition switch -This is really common -In fact do a search on this site and you will find lots of good help on this. -although bad wiring, or bad relays is not completely out of the mix yet.

Jiggle your key around in the ignition switch and see if you can create the problem repeatedly. There are 2 screws on the bottom side of the steering wheel column that undo the bezel which will get you to the connections for inspection if you find that it is the ignition switch.

how hard is it to change the ignition switch. I asked the dealership about it and they said they would change it for 618. that sounds kind of outrageous to me.
