Bying my first Polo, need tips

Im going to buy a used Polo or Passat shortly, and in my price range for Polos I find cars from around 2002-2003 with around 60 000 - 80 000 km on the clock (37 000 - 50 000 miles).

Are there any known problems or anything I should pay extra attention to?
