Default Hazard Lights

Forum

I need help understanding why the hazard lights on my 2003 1.6 VW Polo Classic (sedan) have stopped working.

Indicators work fine, so I thought it must be the switch, which is integral with the relay unit. However after buying and fitting a new relay/switch unit the problem is still there.

Symptoms are:
Left and right indicator lights work fine, but stop working as soon as hazard switch is engaged. When hazard switch is released, indicators work again.

If indicators are off, nothing happens when hazard switch is engaded, not even the light on the hazard switch works.

Without a wiring diagram it is a bit difficult to fault find, so I will appreciate your help. Just a link to an english wiring diagram will help a lot already.

Best I could find so far is the unofficial Russian Volkswagen technical site http://volkswagen.msk.ru/
The electrical section there has wiring diagrams in Russian of the earlier model Polos. Will see what I can do with an online translator...

Thank you for any info or help.
Hans

replace the switch, very common problem with the new intergrated relay units. I stock them at my shop that way I dont have to go to the dealer everytime I need one. Kevin

Thanks Kevin

As said, I have already replaced the switch/relay unit (new from VW dealer).
Do you mean to say that the new unit I bought is faulty too?

I took my multimeter and did some tests to try and find out how it was supposed to work and what was wrong.

Eventually I found that the permanent 12V to the relay was intermittant (mostly 0V!).
As a quick fix I disconnected the wire and connected to the radio 12V which is conveniently nearby and accessible - problem solved!

Cool, but I would trace down that flakey 12V. That way you know that you won't have any problems with it ever again.

Yip, that is the right thing to do. If only I had a propper wiring diagram...
Will be much easier if I at least know where the wire is supposed to pop out after it disapears down the wiring loom.
For my old Jetta, the Haynes manual has all the info including wire colours, connector locations etc, but so far I could not find a workshop manual or wiring diagram for the 2003 Polo Classic from any of the publishers.
