Polo 1.4tdi struggleing to start. HELP!

Hi guys,
Just bought an 02 Polo 1.4tdi.
When it is cold, i am having real problems getting it started. This morning i went out and when i turned the ignition, the engine spluttered into life then died almost immedietly, even with the ignition still being held on. Then when i went to try again, it took about 10 seconds of holding the ignition on before it eventually caught.
Any ideas? The battery is brand new and im sure there is no problems their. If i am starting the engine when it is still warm from the last journey, there are no problems whatsoever.
I would really appreciate any help as i am starting to panic!

Im no expert on this or any other matter but as its a diesel id check the heater plugs first, thats a commom problem starting any diesel according to my history with them. They're not too expensive either. Hope that helps
