Default Polo 1.6i gear selection problems

Hello everybody,

About 2 years ago I bought a '99 Polo 1.6i Classic. I started having problems switching from 2nd to 3rd, but only if I accelerate over a steep incline, like a bridge. I took the car in to my local service center, and the links were adjusted. That solved the problem.

Later on I started having trouble getting the car into 1st, and sometimes reverse. Took the car in again, and a new clutch kit was installed. Again everything went fine for a while.

Then, one day the car refused to go into 1st, no matter what I tried. I drove to the nearest service center, and again the links were adjusted.

I finally bit the bullet and took the car to a gearbox specialist. They checked the links, which were fine, and opened up the box. Three of the syncros had excessive wear, and I asked them to replace all 5 for good measure. Other than that, the box was in good shape.

Now the car is starting to act up again. Sometimes I struggle to get first, and sometimes also 2nd.

The problem is that it happens seemingly randomly. One day the car is fine, the next, problems.

To sum up: a new clutch kit was installed, links replaced and adjusted, the 5 syncros in the gearbox replaced. Anything else I should check?

Thank you!

Pieter
