16V newby What now

My brother in law just handed me the title to a 1987 VW Scirocco. This car has been in a garage for 10 years. Keys were lost. The last time in ran was 10 years ago. He said it was blowing radiator and heater hose everytime he ran it so he parked it. Any idea where I should start after I put in a new ignition. I have never owned anything like this 16V engine.

Probably has a head gasket problem. Compression going into the cooling system and popping the hoses off. I would start by compression testing the motor.
