Default alt problems

i just got my 87 scirocco and then person i bought it from took off the ac and put the alt belt on the water pump pully. i can grab the belt the turn the water pump pully and the alt. the belt is on the inside pully. all it does is free spins. help!!!!!

sounds like that they took off the belt that is connected to the crank pulley
