its running but not good.

I have an 88 sirocco and it is running a little ruff. it is idling around 1000 rpm and when you hit or ease into the gas pedal it will sputter then rev up to about 2500 rpm. when it reaches that point it acts like it wants to try to stall out. I have tried to turn the distributor and adjust the timing and when i do it gets worse to the point that it tries to stall itself out. (HISTORY- the car has not ran in over 8 years and i have just got it back to running. the entire fuel system has been cleaned out and all injectors are firing.)

I have an 87 and it sat for a year or two. sounds like similar prob , but mine does not hesitate at higher rpms . mine gutless when trying to start off in first for the first several hundred rpms . let me know what you find out. I'm going to find and test the main fuel pump, not the one in the tank, then have the fuel presure tested.
