I have an '88 Fox that is my daily driver right now. I put on 115 miles a day. So, I know the engine won't last forever.
I have an '85 Jetta that I use for parts. It also has a 1.8L engine. The engines are mounted differently. My question is this....Is the block the same. If so, I will rebuild the Jetta motor and do a swap over a weekend. That way, I don't have to drive my gas hog during down time.
Don't sell your engine short. These engines run a long time as long as the oil is changed and the engine is not over heated. I have seen many with 300-500k miles on the same engine. Your Jetta engine is the same all you have to swap besides the obvious is the valve cover, oil pan and oil pump assembly. This Jetta I worked on yesterday has 344,230 miles, passes emissions with flying colors, does not drip or burn oil. I have been servicing it since it was out of warranty.
