Default Trade GTI for Passat / Touareg?

As many of you know I own a 2001 GTI VR6 it has 40K and is in MINT shape. I have some minor mods done such as H&R springs, strut bars, upgraded sound, pedals, Sparco shifter, 18's, Neuspeed exhaust and some other small cosmetics. Most of which I would pull off during the trade.

I'm looking to get a few fellow members opinions on a possible trade I may do. Please keep these needs in mind. My next car must be AWD, I would like to stay loyal to the VW brand as well. So the three options that come to mind are Touareg, Passat & R32. I know what you are thinking R32 db no doubt...well here is the next curve ball. We are planning for a family my wife all ready has a 01 Jetta 1.8T which she loves very much and is almost paid off so we plan on keep that. My GTI & the R32 model would be unpracticle as they are only 2DRs. So I sctrach that off the list. Next would be the Touareg, only problem with that is gas mileage. I start my new job on Monday and requires me to travel 100+ miles each day so gas would be killer. So I left with the Passat or Passat Wagon. Again this seems to be the best fit for me and for our future family. AWD, 4 Doors, more space for kids & for hauling VWF Flare to shows. I'm leaning towards the 1.8T manual as well, the V6 has a little more HP & Tourque but the 1.8T is more affordable.

So please share you thoughts.

If you can get a Passat w/ a 1.8T it would have to be brand new IIRC if you also want 4Motion.....expensive to say the least but I don't know your budget. I don't think they offered them w/ 4 motion before 2004. If gas mileage is important to you though, get the 1.8T without a doubt. Even with all the mods on my car, I get 32-34mpg on the highway, and NA MKIV VR6's arent nearly as fast. What do you VR6 guys get for gas mileage?

I'm sort of in the same boat about getting a new car this spring too... but i'm looking for a 2 seater more detail to follow on the coming months about that... now back to topic.. I think the Passat Wagon would be hot. of course your going to do some minor things to it which would be awsome, you don't see many wagons done up. but don't they only come in the 5 speed triptonic and not manual?

Since the passat V6 isn't the VR I don't believe that matters

Have you looked at the V10 TDI Dave? Not sure what that gets for mileage but might be better than the V8.....

It doesn't look like you can get the 2.0 TDI with 4-motion but perhaps the vw website is misleading....

If your looking at the Touareg V6 would the gas mileage be that much worse then a Passat V6? But I think the Passat TDi is a good choice especially concerning gas mileage.

I don't see this option available so I guess it's not the end of our discussion. As for the Touareg V10 TDI no way it's lke $58K not worth the green in my book. Big Dong it would be a brand new Passat yes.

That is definetly another good option...the 1.8t A4 Avant is less than a grand more than the Passat with 4-motion (Base MSRP).
