Default craig@vwdiscountparts -- help!

Hi

I googled the problem I've having with my car and up popped a thread between Craig and someone. Once I signed onto the site, I'll be damned if my multi search approaches produced the thread I am looking for. I have a 2004 1.8T Jetta. My dealership tells me that my cam tensionier is leaking. The leak has "broken" my coolant flange. I am also now needing what the dealership referred to as both the "lower crank case hose" and "breather hose" (or maybe I have two hoses that are broken?). When I asked the mechanic to show me the oil leak, the hose he pointed to was located in the exact same spot as the tensionier leak & coolant flange (at the top of the engine and not in a place I would think would cause the name to be "lower crank case hose"). I was told that the oil leak caused the flange to go bad. Is there a reason that VW is not doing something about this "known problem" as it was called by the mechanic? Now I am hearing this problem might cause my turbo to get gunked up and die? Did I misunderstand that part? I tried to open the attachment that was included in the thread (139 I think it was) to show me the tensionier and other parts but was unsuccessful.

So...this is a known problem but we are on our own to fix it and for some reason weren't alerted that we need to watch for this "known problem". When I have all these issues fixed at one time beings they all live in the same area of my engine compartment, shall I have any other parts looked at -- things that are typically effected as in the turbo?

Thank you for your help!

I haven't heard of an oil leak causing a turbo failure, but it can cause issues with some plastic and rubber parts. I defininitely would get the cam tensioner gasket replaced and fix the coolant flange and breather hose issues at the same time. As long as you are using a high quality synthetic oil, your turbo should be fine. Other than that, I'm not quite sure what you are asking. I don't know what Volkswagen's responsibility would be beyond the 4/50 warranty period. If you can't afford to have everything repaired immediately, I would definitely fix the coolant flange to avoid an overheat. If I can help you with anything else specifically, let me know.

Ok. Thanks. I plan on getting all three issues fixed in the near future.

Since the top of engine will be torn apart to fix the oil leak that caused the coolant leak and to replace the (unrelated) hose failure, I wanted to know if there were any other problems that the oil leak or coolant leak or the broken hose could have caused that I need to have looked for/at before the engine is put back together again. The whole cause and effect thing.

I thought I saw something about sludge and pressure build up in the turbo causing oil leaks and somehow thought the two issues were related. it sounds like that is not the case.

And as far as VW's responsibility. I was venting my frustration at hearing that there is a known reoccurring problem and the car companies (VW in this case) don't do anything about it. That was all. They just rolled out a coil recall. Assuming this was because so many people had coil problems (me included). Would love to see this happen for other known, reoccurring issues.

It is kinda nice though that everything has gone wrong in one location of the engine compartment. Hopefully that means less shop time in break down the engine top and build it back up again.

Thanks for your help
