Default New Member Alert

Just joined your site.

I have a 97 GTI VR6 with a Garrett chip and intake and exhaust performance upgrades. Although this car is extraordinarily quick -I have little interest in the performance of this car -I bought it from a friend for an absolute steal and plan on keeping it road worthy for many years as a daily driver (when Im in town) .

I'm somewhat of an expert at old 3 series BMWs and have almost already cleaned and rebuilt most of this little GTI based on this experience and a kick ass Bentleys manual. (I already burned the Haynes manual I purchased first for this GTI.)

Sometimes I do a kick down to 3rd to hear the car growl for giggles but mainly I'm just trying to stay ahead of those European electrical Gremlins.

It definitley has the coolest sounding motor of any of the cars I have ever owned. Although it sounded even better with the Neu Speed PFLO K&N foam filter that it had on it when I bought it, but they do not make that filter any more so I put the modern equivilent K&N paper filter on it. It doesn't sound quite as lively and aggressive anymore. Oh well -the fuel economy improved slightly.

I have never seen the Fuelly log/site that is on your signature before. That is very interesting.

My VR6 is getting around 25 MPG average combined and can get about 31 on the highway (this is with atleast 91 to 93 octane)

My manual mileage calculations agree with the computer mileage calculations which was definitely a surprise.

I had read that a performance chip can actually improve your mileage if you drive conservatively (which I do the majority of times). I have yet to verify this.
