Does anyone know the significance of the 'X1' model golf?

I purchased a 1986 VW Golf'X1' this summer for $200. It needed a new clutch and a few minor things (shift linkages and hoses) to make it driveable, and it has fairly major body damage on the back left. I just don't know the significance of the 'X1' part.

It has decals aong the side that say X1, though they're nearly sunbaked off. They look like this: http://65.215.194.153/Merchant2/merchant.mv?store_code=FD&screen=PROD&product_code=4929101
It also looks like it used to have X1 emblems on the front left and right fenders, directly in front of the doors, and one on the back right of the car that said Golf X1.
I belive it also came with an alarm and fender flares/sideskirts.

Anyone know anything about it?

The name of the body kit made by Kamei was the X1. Those badges came with the body kit it had(has?).
