Prior to the 2002 Model year, VW had free maintenance. They also had a 2 year/24,000 mile warranty. Now they have no free maintenance, but a 4 year/50,000 mile warranty. Its a trade off.
Free maintenance was covered on 1.8T and Passat V6 engines at 5K, 10K, 15K and 20K, but if you had a 2.0, VR6 or TDI, the maintenances were only covered at 5K, 10K and 20K. No free 15K....which led to a lot of engines coming in with clogged oil pickups...
Oh yeah...a 20K, as per the VW Owners Manual and Maintenance Guide, consists of:
Tire Rotation, adjust tire pressures
Top off all fluids
Change Cabin Air Filter
Scan all control modules for faults
And just an overall check of the car...
