Hi all,

2001 MK4 2.0 - Couldn't get it started the other day, roadside assistance came to the rescue, whacked the fuel tank from underneath with a mallet and got me going again. Great. Now I drive around with a rubber mallet in the boot and when it happens again, I just give it a whack to get her going (I'm aware I can't do this forever). Once it's running it's pretty well spot on, I did have some minor idling issues a few months ago but they seem to have cleared on their own.

As for the diagnosis I am needing help because... sometimes when I open the drivers door, I do not hear the fuel pump priming and hence can't start it - this leads me to believe it's an electrical problem.

But since the solution seems to be hitting the tank, it leads me to think it's a physical problem with the pump itself.

Can anyone shed some light on the situation?

Thanks for any help!
Sandy

If you have a aftermarket fuel pump relay. It will not run with the door open. I’d say you have a weak fuel pump.

It's an electric one. Have just ordered a replacement Goss pump, pretty sure that's the problem now. Cheers
