Hello VW folks!

I recently purchased an 87 golf with a charging problem. I tested the alternator with a voltmeter and found it to be putting out only 3 volts at idle. Thinking the alternator was bad, I replaced it with a new one and hooked it all up. I started her up and disconnected the battery (should keep running if alternator is putting out correct voltage right?) and she stalled... problem remained. I then tested the new alternator with my voltmeter and found that it too is now only putting out 3 volts at idle. Is there a short in the wireharness somewheres that could be burning out the alternator that quick? Am I correct that the alternator should be able to power the vehicle w/o battery power once its running? Any thoughts as to what may be going on here?

Thanks!
