So back in 1995, when VW designed the cupholders in the jetta/golf, they didn't think far enough into the future to foresee that one day, Starbucks would rule the lives of ALL college students during finals week and that, on some Sunday evening in May of 2003, a certain college student would be driving his brother-in-laws jetta to go get coffee during a study break, and that THAT certain college student would need to put his Venti White Chocolate Mocha in said cup holder, so he can shift gears. No, they did not have that kind of foresight my friend, and because of THAT lack of anticipation of future needs, I was stuck driving the car home with ONE had!

But all is well and I've made it back so I can endulge myself in Western Civ once again.....

I, along with most other mk1-2 drivers I'm sure, are all too familier with the one-handed shifting! I would be happy with even a small cup holder.

I've broken 2 cupholders! It doesn't matter if you have a mk1 or an mk4... vw can't make a decent set of cup holders!

yes agreed that pisses me off too. another thing that is wrong with the cupholders on the mk4's is that when u want to switch cd's you have to take of the drink, push the cupholder in, release the cd, spill your drink, yell, get a new cd, put that one in, almost cause an accident, push the cupholder out again, with half the drink left, put it on and continue driving with ur balls soaking in soda.

Nobody makes good cupholders... You seen the ones in the beetle. If its not a can, it wont fit. The neon was even worse. THe ford escort had a 3/4" lip around it, so things would flip out of it continuously... and mY nissan 240 didnt have one at all. The Dakota had one, but it was by the passenger door, so you had to unbuckle the seatbelt to take a sip.

Cupholders and cars just don't mix... Its like the one part of the car that noone can figure out...

mmm...white chocolate mocha... One time I had a full Dunkiccino in my cup holder and I accellerated a little fast, and low and behold, it ended up ALL over the place. I was very unhappy for the rest of that 2.5 hour drive.

the '03s have different cupholders tho, right? anyone experienced them? also, the ford expe actually has some nice ones: molded in with an indentation for handles on mugs, and removeable rubber layer for real big cups! other than that, worst...car...ever!

I just use my center console where my elbow is to hold my drinks. The only thing the regular cupholders are for is a coke can and spare change.

Haha, I'm glad to see so many people feel my pain. I don't have any complaints about the ones in my GTI though, other than the CD thing, but that's a rare occurance.

Oh, and Josh, my 240 had a "cup holder" and would have worked great too, had I ever found a cup with a SQUARE bottom!!!!!

eyah but that is why there is the "no food/drink rule." if there is food/drink then it will lead to badness. bad things like spills or bad smells with teh food. gerrr! i hate not having either the Stink Tree "New Car Scent" or the standard 90 Gti smell. y'all know what i mean by the standard 90 GTi smell right. like when you got your car, if you didnt have an air freshener, it had a smell right? well, they all have the same smell. DB's old GTi probly had the same smell as mine! its krazy!

Josh is right. I spilled coke all over it once and it behaved the same way you described Dubwink. Remove it and wash it down with a lot of hot water. Let air dry then apply lubrication to the moving parts. Worked like a charm here. And also:

Hey Dubwink, Its probably got some goo on it. Mine did that, and I just took a qtip with some 409 on it and went around the bottom of the arms and all the sliding places, and it started working again. It just gets gunk gummed up inside the works and sticks shut. If not, they aren't too terribly expensive to replace at the dealer.

I think they would work better if they were metal, the plastic arms are too flexible, and you can loose a cup over the top if you jump on the gas too fast.
